Blows for Freedom

Friday the 13th - the Curse is Lifted! As Mrs T once said, Rejoice, Rejoice!

How proud the Irish should be*. After David Davis struck a first blow for freedom yesterday (on which I may blog later, although others have already done so wonderfully, particularly DK and Guido), another blow was struck today.

God willing, may these be the first of many!

*The Bishop should make it clear that he is half-Irish, but cannot claim any credit, as he failed to gain citizenship in time to vote. If those cunts in the Commission think they can try again to reverse a democratic verdict (as with Nice and Maastricht), I hope I will be joined by many in the UK who have been denied a vote by that lying sod Brown but are entitled to Irish citizenship in applying for it, and then voting for a 'No'...

Recently Drunk (Health fascists - FOAD!)

Le Mandolare Recioto di Soave, 2002 - 17/20 (A good recioto di soave, but I've had better ones. Lots of dried fruit, but needs a little more structure to balance the sweetness. Good for the price - this can be very expensive stuff...)
Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, 1998 - 17.5/20 (Wine with good reputation. A balance between Californian and French styles. Yum!)
Linden Cabernet Franc, Virginia, US, 2001 - 18/20 (A very well balanced, structured wine that is closer in sensibility to France than its Californian cousins. If you get the chance, try it! Even if the winemaker sounds like a wine ponce! :-)
Ridge Geyserville Zinfandel, California, 2000 - 18/20 (One of the few Ridge Zins that might have been better drunk younger (although it could be that this will open up again given a few more years) - the 1999s are still wonderful, but this is probably just beyond its best. Nonetheless, still full of Ridge's trademark deep, structured fruit and better than almost anything else out there...)
Lindemans St George Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, 1998 - 20/20 (A beauty of a wine, lots of red berries, dark chocolate, etc., well-structured with a lovely lingering taste. Mrs Brennan's favourite! :-)
Faustino I Rioja, Gran Reserva, 1996 - 17.5/20 (As the link suggests, supposed to be a top-class Rioja, but I'm not 100% convinced - I'd go for Muga instead. But - especially at a discount from the local supermarket - not at all bad, especially with a good steak)
Louis Jadot Chablis, 2006 - 17.5/20 (Classic Chablis, good stuff)
Mas Amiel Maury, 2004 - 19/20 (Yummy red dessert wine. Definitely worth seeking out!)
De Bortoli Yarra Valley Estate Grown Chardonnay, 2004 - 19/20 (Bin-end from Tesco - get some if you can. Absolutely fabulous!)
Chalk Hill McLaren Vale Sidetrack (Shiraz, Cabernet, Grenache), Australia, 2005 - 17.5/20 (Not as good as their Sangiovese, but delicious nonetheless!)
Innocent Bystander Moscato, Victoria, Australia, 2008 - 18/20 (Extraordinary stuff. Great for a hot summer's day in the garden)
Joseph Phelps Insignia, Napa Valley, 1993 - 20/20 (I've drunk Ridge Monte Bello, Penfolds Grange... THIS is the best wine I have ever tasted. Complex but still retaining its fruit, perfection in a glass. And even a Frenchman had to agree! :-)
